What We Do
The Volunteer Healthcare Clinic (VHC) provides acute, primary care to vulnerable children and adults in Travis County. By providing uninsured adults and children a place to obtain health care, we help prevent the spread of infectious disease and the escalation of an illness. Preventive care also provides early detection for potentially serious diseases and reduces the use of hospital emergency rooms for routine care, thus keeping medical costs down for the entire community.
In addition to acute primary care, the Clinic also provides Chronic Disease Management for diabetes and hypertension, limited mental health and physical therapy services, medication assistance, social service referrals, case management, some specialty care, nutrition counseling and other health and prevention education. Children's well-child exams and sports physicals are offered on a seasonal basis and well woman services are offered twice a year.
Donors
While the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic is 'free' to those who need our services, the costs associated with operating the Clinic are very real. It is the collective investment of our funders, volunteers, community partners and supporters that make the Clinic services possible.
VHC gratefully acknowledges the following foundations and organizations for their generosity and sustaining financial support in 2017/2018:
Collaborations
The Volunteer Healthcare Clinic is fortunate to have the support of the medical community and many community partners who donate services in-kind, enabling us to provide a wide array of services to our clients at no cost. Donated services include in-depth laboratory testing, radiological testing, specialty care and dental services to name just a few. VHC actively partners with other organizations to expand the breadth of services available to our clients while reducing the duplication of services.

Return on Investment
By providing a trusted place for individuals to turn for much-needed medical care, VHC prevents the unnecessary use of the Emergency Room (ER) for primary and non-emergency care. In 2017, VHC saved the Austin community an estimated $631,620* in avoided ER visits while providing quality health care to hundreds.
*Based on 435 avoided ER visits (self-reported by patients) x $1,452 (average cost of an ER visit)).
Ways To Get Involved
Have you ever considered setting up a recurring gift, hosting an event or having a supplies drive for the Clinic? How about setting up your own personal fundraising campaign for the big Amplify Austin event in the Spring or donating HEB or Walmart gift cards for VHC clients at Christmas? In order to remain free to patients in need, the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic relies on the generous support of the community and we are always looking for ways to engage even more individuals in our mission. There are many ways you can support the programs and services that are so vital to the health of our community and the Clinic's continued success. Learn more
